Canary in the Coal Mine
For years we Israelis have been warning the world that what is happening here will soon happen elsewhere. We are simply experiencing it first. And if they equivocate, excuse and justify such attacks against Israelis, they too will soon begin to feel the terrible effects of Islamic violence.
Yet the wise leaders of the world's governments and diplomatic institutions have rejected the idea that Israel is just a canary in the world's coal mine*. We must have provoked the violence directed against us, as well as the groundswell of anger emanating from the Muslim world.
After all, no reasonable people would behave with such violence and callous disregard for human life, unprovoked.
No reasonable people, indeed.
Now after months of silence from the Europeans regarding the current wave of stabbings and shootings we have been enduring here in Israel, somewhat apropos of the canary in the coal mine analogy, a stabbing attack has just been reported in the tunnels of the London Underground.
Interestingly, the New York Times is already reporting the attack in London as 'terrorism', while they have largely ignored the attacks happening here, or dismissed them as the random acts of 'militants'. I guess the difference between Chateaubriand and Flanken depends on where you cut it.
I'll be interested to see if such attacks against Europeans will be greeted with the same indifference and apathy as those carried out against Israelis... or if the creeping danger in the tunnels will finally be recognized for what it is, and addressed with clear-eyed resolve by the civilized world.
*An allusion to caged canaries (birds) that miners would carry down into the mine tunnels with them. If dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide collected in the mine, the gases would kill the canary before killing the miners, thus providing a warning to exit the tunnels immediately.

There is a problem with using the canary in the coal mine analogy.... We are able to fight, and the other countries much less so.

Robin ... I don't agree. The primary responsibility of governments is to protect their citizens against threats, both foreign and domestic. The societies that are coming under attack in Europe and the US are ostensibly under the same kind of governmental protection as we enjoy. Whether those governments have the wit or resolve to use the tools at their disposal to protect their citizens is another story. Just don't confuse 'unable' with 'unwilling' when it comes to fighting this threat.

I couldn't agree more. However, l don't think the Western world will be able to face the truth until thousands more die and we reach the same state of constant peril Israel has been coping with for decades now. The other countries would be better prepared by now if they'd started taking steps ages ago, this shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone truly paying attention, but PC, anti-semitism and denial have been a powerful, deadly combo. Not that they're minding learning from Israel now, even as mainstream media continue to do their splendid job.

Obama is giving a national TV address Sun evening. Expect the same platitudes and delusions. I wonder if the stabbings experienced in Israel and now the UK will come to the US. Sort of doubt it,as combat rifles and homemade bombs seem to be the weapons of choice.I hope the West wakes up before many more innocents are killed.

A stabbing attack in London means the British will blame Israel.

In the US, the canary, being foreign & non-white, was determined to be of a protected class. The mine warning use is clearly exploitative, thus the canary was replaced with signs and placards designating the mines as toxic gas free zones. Miners deaths will now be reported/justified/apologized for as partially blamed on the miners themselves. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/san-bernardino-bloodbath-born-bigots-article-1.2456491

You've got to hand it to the UK authorities though... tasering the knife welding moron, Muslim or otherwise was sensible damage control. By now, they must have answers to his intent and might have sufficient information to prevent prevent further heinous acts.
Keyword: damage control :-)
