FWIW, we are all too well versed with the dangers of drinking and driving -- I was a kid on the NCSY Shabbaton in February 1981 during which a walking group was hit by a drunk driver.... I lost three good friends that night. As a result, I am positively manic about having a designated driver (as is David).

You were quite right to pose the question. I'd hate to think that someone might act irresponsibly as a result of hearing about our evening out!

I hope that none of the readers here are ever personally touched by the horrors of a driver under the influence! There are no do-overs in these situations -- the damage can be, quite literally, deadly. An automobile can quickly go from convenience to weapon in the hands of an irresponsible person.

For any occasion we attend together where alcohol is served we determine who will be driving home long before we arrive.
Bob Miller commented on 'I'm guessing that was the beer talking'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341c581e53ef0120a538e3a0970b2009-08-31T20:39:54Z2009-08-31T20:39:54ZBob MillerMy faves are Labatt Blue (Canada) and Pilsner Urquell (Czech)
My faves are Labatt Blue (Canada) and Pilsner Urquell (Czech)
ED commented on 'I'm guessing that was the beer talking'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341c581e53ef0120a53889cd970b2009-08-31T19:21:20Z2009-08-31T19:21:20ZEDMy solution is to boycott Swedish Men(A Swedish woman official did try to apologize). And when I saw him later, he was talking to a girl, and I never interrupt those conversations.
- I never saw you. Disappointing, because I *know* my husband and I would have loved to have joined the "how to handle" conversation. Although probably better for you to not have some strange chick in a tichel screaching, "TREPPENWITZ!" ;)
- Dancing Camel's Diablo something. Or something Diablo. It was a little better last year, but it's still my favourite. Spicy!
- Had fun, but liked the venue last year better. Last year felt funky urban, this year felt like, um, Lallapabooza.
- I love that Dati people can go to a beer fest, drink all the beer - types, all the beer *types* - and eat the food (oh yeah, no veggie options this year? All the food was meaty, but there was an ice cream stand? Cruel.). Why shouldn't observant people be able to enjoy this stuff, too?!
- I wish there was a Swedish beer. I would have asked them what size drink I could get for a kidney.
dancing camel commented on 'I'm guessing that was the beer talking'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341c581e53ef0120a532eb7a970b2009-08-30T12:16:56Z2009-08-30T12:16:56Zdancing camelJEWISH WHITE MALE SEEKING - one liver, clean, low mileage (moslem preferred). 3 years into the dancing camel & I'm...
JEWISH WHITE MALE SEEKING - one liver, clean, low mileage (moslem preferred).

I never quite understand this puritanical streak that some segments of the dati community express quite thoughtlessly about drinking. Like anything else potentially dangerous (i.e. driving, flying, crossing the street), drinking alcohol should be done carefully and mindful of the potential risks. However, it can be enjoyable and can add a great deal to food and social gatherings. To suggest that it is the exclusive realm of the secular Tel Avivis is both narrow-minded and wrong. The sages discuss in detail how wine and 'Chamar Medina' (beer) can and should be enjoyed as part of a full and mitzvah-oriented life. Your comment makes you sound like a Mormon or Methodist... not a Jew.

1. Confess. Always confess.

2. Explain we don't sell the organs, but give them away free as part of our socialized medicine.

3. Point out that Palestinians are equally eligible to receive these organs.

4. Further point out that Swedish reporters are reputed to have excellent organs and we have a team on the way...
