Darn you to heck, American Idol!

So yeah... the new mattresses arrived.  Incredible!  Better than incredible!!!  Really.  But more about that later.

Right now I can't see straight because:

a)  last night was family movie night, and we stayed up relatively late watching the original 'Planet of the Apes' with the kids.  Best moment of the night was at the end when Gilad and Yonah both sat up and suddenly 'got' the odd reference from 'Madagascar' where the Lion throws himself down on the beach and screams, "Darn you... darn you all to heck!".

b)  when movie night was over and the kids were finally in bed, I started heading for the bedroom... only to be stopped by zahava looking up from her knitting and sweetly asking, "Aren't you going to keep me company while I watch American Idol?"

Now, I swore to myself that I wouldn't let her suck me in again this year.  I swore!!!  I'd made up my mind that this year I wouldn't let myself get personally/emotionally invested in this vapid love child of 'Survivor' and 'The Gong Show'.  Uh-uh... nope... not me!

So naturally, as soon as the theme music started playing and they started showing rapid fire shots of Paula's leathery, overly-tanned skin and Simon's disturbingly belt-sanded buzz-cut, I was powerless to resist.  Before I could fight my way out of the warm blue tractor- beam, I found myself critiquing outfits and song selections... not to mention commenting on the relative 'pitchiness' of each musical offering and the chances of each performer advancing to the next round.

Here in Israel the network has been combining two 'American Idol' shows in a row so you get to see each segment of the competition followed by the following night's results, back-to-back.  Well last night they tossed in the wild-card results for the final 12 as well... resulting in a triple-header that only started at 10:45PM!

It was well after 1:00AM when I finally looked at Jordan and Lulu slumbering peacefully at my feet and said, "Yo dawgs, listen up... that looks like a crazy hot idea... I'm going to bed too!"

And now I'm so tired I can't see straight!

[Update:  Given last night's movie selection, this news story couldn't have been more aptly timed]

I stick with my favorite line when someone grabs me... "Get your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!"

When does Israel switch to DST? We did it today, hope you didn't, because that would have made it feel like well after 2 am rather than 1 am. I managed to wean myself off of American Idol, and America's got talent. My wife tries to get me into Dancing with the Stars, but once Marlee Matlin was off, I had no interest.

We watched American Idol the last couple years, but have seen only one show this year. Given all the other things going on - sports (practices & matches), study, work and so on - it fell below the line this year. And really, the formula is just getting old. There are only so many times someone can get a kick out of watching the judges do the same old thing, time after time.

I make Linda watch it with me, but she 'listens' more than she watches... she doesn't get sucked in EVER!
But, me? I love it! :)

Planet of the Apes? No, more like... 2 Monkeys

You know, David, it's also on earlier Sat. night, but I never get to those episodes. Alas, I too am sucked in. It's like a bad car accident, you can't help but look. Like that guy--? with the headband (Nathaniel?)--I couldn't help but look at him with a horrified fascination.

But you think you have problems? Grey's Anatomy is on about 15 minutes after Idol finishes. Don't even ask me how I know...

JDMDad ... I plan on showing the kids the whole series of POTA films. A part of any well-rounded education...

Steve Bogner... They actually added a judge this year so there are four now. But yeah, same basic stuff. What can I say... you could leave the TV tuned to a test pattern or even snow, and I'd still pull up a chair and watch. :-)

val ... Why am I not surprised.

JoeSettler ... Hmmm, somebody didn't read my post all the way to the end. tsk, tsk, tsk.

Baila... OMG I couldn't believe the EMO kid with the headband got through to the regular season. Zahava and I both agree so far that our favorite is the short blond girl from the first group (the one with the pink streaks in her hair)... but I'm intrigued by the pretty blonde with the big tats (notice I said TATS, people!) who made it into the final 12 as a wild card . Oh, and I'm such a dishrag... I got all chocked up when Gorge started gushing in Spanish! :~/

I would not have imagined that Zahava is into American Idol. I have a friend, who shall remain nameless, who does not miss any episode of the show, and who has dragged her family (husband and 3 kids ages 7 to 14) to American Idol concerts. Just to give you an idea how much she knows about the show, last week she was on a flight from Fort Lauderdale to NY, and she called us to say that she just met the producer of American Idol. I know the guy's name is Simon Fuller, but do you know what the producer looks like to recognize him at an airport?

btw, was it you who rated the article about the monkeys with five stars?

Sex in the City, Desperate Housewives...I could understand. American Idol?! You disappoint me, David. Seriously, there are better American TV shows to watch...

Reality TV is SO out.

Eeek! wrong reference FYI - its d-o-g with O not AW... :-)

My wife also watches that shtus. I watch different shtus ...

My friend Barry comments that he has never missed a single episode of “American Idol.”

Never watched it... and never missed it.

I think you'll have to start a regular series here, Dave: Trep does Idol. Who'da thunk it? My favorite is the blind guy, although he's no Stevie Wonder, I'm just a sucker for that kind of stuff.

And did you know that in Hebrew Jorge is spelled חורחה? (Can't put in nekudot)--I just found that funny.

Hi Zahava, are you knitting hats for soldiers? Since David blogged about this, I am on hat no 4. I am so excited about that project. Never seen American Idol, but I know how compulsive rubbish on TV can be -that's why we dumped our subscription to SKY.

I keep waiting for the day in which that show is cancelled. Can't be too soon.

Wow. American Idol. Hmmmm....

Zahava, call me, I'm sure we can find something more worthwhile that you will enjoy....

Seriously, that show does not do it for me.

But, Eurovision? Well, that's something else! Of course, it's only once a year....

Megan. She's been my favorite since her audition. I'm so glad she made it as a wild card.
