As several (presumably English) readers have pointed out, that is a Teasmade. It was made b the Goblin company for many years and was, as Judy Points out, as cliche a wedding gift in its day as the Fondue pot was for America couples.

Tina-cious.com... Well, it is a time machine of sorts. It allows you to wake up to a nice cup of tea (or coffee) without having to get out of bed and prepare it. Saved time is important too.

Atlantic... Right you are. Mine is the model 855 that was popular in the early 70s.

Karl Newman... Now how in the world did you know what it was???

Judy... 30 years sounds about right. Mine is a model from the 70s. I love the anachronistic aspect of it aside from its obvious usefulness.

Sara K... Thanks Sara. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he's better just yet. He is in a lot of pain and got up about a dozen times during the night.

Kiwi the Geek... This is one of my favorite things I have ever bought (and over which my wife rolled her eyes). It is called an air desk.

Albert... Yes, we are pleased as punch to have him home. Now if only we could get him to eat his ice cream! :-)

But I can still remember the time when they were desirable items on yer nice Jewish couple's wedding present list-- and it was the mark of a posh hotel that they might offer one in your bedroom. In England, they were killed off, I think, by a combination of the high speed electric jug kettle, the teabag plus an awareness that it's not such a smart idea to have milk sitting outside a fridge overnight. Good luck to you if you actually use yours to make tea.
Karl Newman commented on 'Yonah's home in bed.
