You knew this was coming

You have to admit that part of the prurient interest in these news stories about public figures and well-known persons getting arrested for their peccadilloes is the anticipation of seeing the high and mighty (or at least those who claim to be higher and mightier than us) paraded before the press in the traditional perp-walk.

Some bear this hand-cuffed walk of shame with quiet dignity while others try to hide as much of themselves as possible under newspapers, raincoats or whatever is handy.

So when the leader of the Beit Shemesh Burka-Wearing Heredi Ladies (BSBWHL) got herself pinched for allegedly abusing her kids, you just knew the perp-walk was going to be, um, somewhat less-than-satisfying:

On the other hand, the officer who is escorting her (at least in this low res picture) is quite hubbalicious.

What is the protocol for when a perp trips, falls and breaks an arm because she can't see through her burka.

Forget about Pakistan. Apparently bin Ladin and Mullah Omar are hiding in Beit Shemesh.

Whether she is mentally ill or a criminal remains to be seen. But one thing is irrefutable: we Orthodox Jews are not immune from the Jim Jones phenomenon.

I'm really curious to know, now that their leader has been arrested for child abuse, whether the women who have been emulating her will continue to dress the way they have been (probably insisting that their leader is innocent) or whether they will quietly go back to wearing "only" hats, wigs, and ankle-length skirts.

The women are still running around Beit Shemesh. (Check out www.lifeinisrael.blogspot.com and www.mominisrael.blogspot.com).

This IS cult-like behavior.

It probably takes a while for the news/realization to sink in. Changing one's behavior does not come easily, especially if they'd already gone through the process of changing TO that behavior.

The photo is kind of funny, in a warped and twisted sort of way.

I was getting confused by the news reports and the PurimShpiel on Youtube (note – the PurimShpiel was posted well before the tales of abuse emerged, while these women were a freak-show, no more)
So I did a googlesearch and found a Jpost article which included the following:

Quote

Until the arrest was publicized, the small Beit Shemesh community of women who wear burkas, multiple layers of clothing and full face coverings, was regularly ostracized by the local haredi community.
"We pulled them off buses and yelled at them, 'Desecrators of God's name!'" said a Beit Shemesh source.
Until now, these women sought comfort in one another and in their leader.

EndQuote

Duh, really is that the way to convince them of the error of their ways, or to drive them into a corner?
Pulling them off buses? Yelling at them? Really not darchei noam.
Or was there a conspiracy of silence about darker deeds even back then?
I hope these people never take over the mainstream!

barizilai:

"Whether she is mentally ill or a criminal remains to be seen."
