You could build and paint a closet organizer for your wife's existing closet. She'd be happy with something new, well-designed closet organizers create an amazing amount of space, and then the nursery would be all yours. It could be a good compromise!
I thought your lovely daughter was nudging you to join in someone else's love of sewing (I made the assumption a grandmother or aunt)... amazing the conclusions we jump to when we don't understand all the words we read...
my apologies.
Well, then it is up to the two of you to decide whether each of you get your own office, or you make Yonah's room into a room that can also be Ariella's and can serve as a 'safe' ('is anything really safe with boys around the age of three?', she asks knowingly) space where mother and daughter can share in a bonding activity...
I would love to be able to sew. My mother made me a dress once... I am forever thankful that she never attempted to share that knowledge (or lack thereof) with me... it was not her strong point! :-).

My son is almost three... I still have him in a crib...I tell others that it's for containment purposes. He has never tried to climb out and he likes to wake at 5:30 on saturday mornings, so the crib is convenient. But, really, I just want him to stay my baby a wee bit longer...I've made myself set a deadline of his third birthday, but it just isn't easy to let the last one leave the 'baby' stage, is it?

Good luck, you two!
Used to make all of Ariella's Shabbat dresses. Ariella teach her, but I lack a Yonah-proof place to set stuff up. Zahava went easy on you, IMO!

However, because I agree with her that indoor space is primo, I can't see the justification of making a room just for sewing when it isn't something she is passionate about, but rather something she is being strongly encouraged to try 'get into'. Chances are good that the hobby may not take off and then you have a space that isn't used nearly as much as an office would be for someone who spends as much time as you seem to at a computer...THAT is a waste of primo space.

Trep: I think the bee-keeping equipment is the key here. Subtly imply that the use of the room as a walk-in closet (or sewing room) would inevitably necessitate the keeping of at least one hive of bees in the kitchen and perhaps another in the master bath.

Between you and me, I'm sure a "logical" chain of reason could be trumped up to support the cause and effect.

P.S. in OUR dream house of he future, I've designed -- all for myself -- a "Luddite" room, which will have no electrical outlets in it. Just books and legal pads and maybe a typewriter. And a cot.

Rule number 1 in any happy marraige is to give the wife what she wants. Rule number 2 is if you don't violate rule #1 she will give you what you want! Be a man and build her that "closet". Now maybe you do prefer playing with the bees and hand tools by yourself? I built out our walk in closet years ago, effectively doubling its capacity thinking I would have access to maybe 40% of it. However, I think beekeeping and shop tools should be in a shop. Is the nursery big enough to be a shop? Would you want to lug equipment up and down stairs? Perhaps another outbuilding would be best. But if Zahava (beautiful name BTW) doesn't end up making good use of a sewing room (I know I wouldn't) it would be quite a waste.
I can only wonder about Yonah's reaction when he discovers these "priceless" pictures available for public viewing :-P
mercurial scribe commented on 'Conflicted'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341c581e53ef00e5503ecfb388332007-02-28T11:11:54Z2008-02-14T04:49:46Zmercurial scribehttp://www.mercurialscribe.com/Oh man... i can't even weigh in officially on this one because 1) i'll always vote for an office (i'm...
Oh man... i can't even weigh in officially on this one because 1) i'll always vote for an office (i'm a writer and a bibliophile, hello!) and 2) i must back a wife on her dispute because i'm sure she has the whole home's most practical needs at heart. But this places me in the middle, and alas, the balance is struck as neutral with me...

And naughty trep for letting your web community see your child's bum while peeing. Someday he will rue the moment you purchased a camera, let alone started a blog!
treppenwitz commented on 'Conflicted'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341c581e53ef00e5503ecf3a88332007-02-28T10:06:11Z2008-02-14T04:49:41Ztreppenwitzhttp://www.treppenwitz.comZahava... a) You were the one who brought up the walk-in closet concept, not me; b) From a man's perspective...
Zahava... a) You were the one who brought up the walk-in closet concept, not me;
b) From a man's perspective a sewing room and a walk-in closet are essentially the same thing (wasted space with lots of clothes and material hanging around);
c)Yes, I enjoy surfing in bed, but I abandoned the office mostly because you stole my Aeron chair and began stacking your stuff on all my work surfaces;
d) All of the gardening equipment is already in our very functional outdoor shed. I only mentioned my beekeeping equipment and my shop tools;
e)if you want to continue sharing the most intimate details of Yonah's excretory exploits with a car full of strangers... feel free. :-)
zahava commented on 'Conflicted'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341c581e53ef00e55052599b88342007-02-28T09:56:58Z2008-02-14T04:49:45ZzahavaOh... and since you've unfairly stacked the deck.... 1) The office has, in part, become my office de facto because...
Oh... and since you've unfairly stacked the deck....

1) The office has, in part, become my office de facto because you no longer work off a desktop computer, preferring to work off your laptop on a stand which hovers conveniently over your BED -- thus allowing you to combine your two favorite pursuits (being horizontal and surfing) simultaneously!

2)Using a room in the house to store gardening equipment compared to say... buying an outdoor storage shed... just strikes me as plain WRONG! Interior space is a premium, man!

Oh... and now that you've included several thousand of our "closest" acquaintances to weigh in on family decisions.... I wouldn't be complaining any more about what I "share" with your trempistim when I am on the diborit! :-)
zahava commented on 'Conflicted'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341c581e53ef00e5503eef3a88332007-02-28T09:49:35Z2008-02-14T04:55:04ZzahavaUmmmm.... hate to disagree, but I have no aspirations to turn that room into a walk-in closet -- nor do...
Ummmm.... hate to disagree, but I have no aspirations to turn that room into a walk-in closet -- nor do I have the wardrobe to warrant such a request. I DID however, entertain fleeting dreams of setting up a sewing room.... Ariella has been hoching me nischt g'chinik (spelling?! pronunciation?)to share Savta's (z"l) craft with her....
