Reminded
Today is a day to be reminded.
I was reminded as we sat down for our last big family breakfast together... with my parent's luggage stacked neatly near the door.
I was reminded when we got to the airport and the flags were flying stiffly at half staff against a lead-gray sky... lest happy vacationers forget the steep price paid (in blood) for the privilege of an Israeli airport.
I was reminded as I said goodbye to the criminals of Turdistan (who were being extradited to the US). They really weren't as bad as I made them out to be... and Jordan will miss her American playmates.
I was reminded when we stood silently at attention for two minutes with the other travelers as the siren's heartbreaking note echoed throughout the terminal... and around the country. Some people studied their shoes... and others dampened them with tears. Few are the families in this country that hasn't lost a father, son, daughter, relative or friend to one of the country's wars.
I was reminded when the time came for our goodbye at the security gate. The fact that they'll be back (G-d willing) in January didn't keep the tears from any of our eyes. Why am I always reminded so late what these two special people mean to me.
And as they walked away towards their gate, I was reminded to never take anything for granted; A Jewish State, good health, long life, children.... or parents .
I will remember.
"...try to open up your heart to beauty;
Go to the woods someday;
And weave a wreath of memory there.
Then if the tears obscure your way
You'll know how wonderful it is
To be alive."-Anonymous-
(last stanza of a poem found among the personal belongings at the Theresienstadt concentration camp)

Nice post. Very important thoughts...
By the way, did you ever notice how the siren on Memorial Day and on Holocaust Day really hurts dogs' ears?
Maybe the the siren should be made dog-freindly by lowering the tone or something.

Oh, those poor incarcerated dogs! LOL!
Granted Addie's constant retreival of all things truly disgusting from the garbage in the kitchen was getting old, but I wouldn't have extradited either dog for their transgressions!!!
With the big kids at friends, Yonah napping, and Mom and Dad and their dogs gone [SNIFF! -- I MISS THEM TERRIBLY ALREADY!] the house has taken on an eerie quiet! I am truly looking forward (IY"H) the return of all of them as soon as possible!
We are truly blessed!

What a great post!
I'm intrigued by those pictures of the airport. It's so empty! Last time I was in Ben Gurion, the lines at the counters went on forever. (Only the El Al counters had lines. The other airport counters had mobs.) Maybe that was an unusual time though, because there had been a strike and planes didn't fly for a day.
I like the pictures of the poor doggies and of your parents. We do have to treasure them. I mean the parents. Doggies too. ;)

Thank you for this beautiful post.
You are blessed to still have both your parents (kein ayin ha-ra) - enjoy them.
Today is my elder daughter's birthday...and like the breaking of the glass at a wedding which reminds us of loss in the midst of joy, it's appropriate today to remember those who are no longer able to celebrate birthdays.

A very moving post indeed. I hate seeing a dog in those walking cages. How often do we take our parents for granted? Great post.

Beautifully said. The timing of these days in Israel is so inspirational. Last week was Yom Hashoa, Holocaust Rememberance Day. Then today, Memorial Day, to remember fallen soldiers. Then Yom Haatzmaut, Israel's Independence Day. The timing is a concrete annual reminder that out of the ashes of the Shoa, and with the sacrifice of many lives, the State of Israel exists.

You should have a tissue box warning for your posts!!! I am greatful that you are able to look at the good and be thankful fro what you have. Some people need negative reminders to bring their bounty into focus.
Thank you for your moving words and thoughts to ponder.

Now I know who you kids take after --your parents are adorable! Thank you for your the reminder that we really should treasure our parents (and dogs --and cats!); it is often too easy to take them and their being there for granted. The poem you ended with...

My first visit to your blog, and you make me cry! Guess that means I'll have to come back. You are so lucky in your parents - may they live to 120 and visit you often! Mine refuse to come here...

Very moving. I think what made it even more so were the pictures. It's great that your parents came to visit. Probably my favorite part of the blog was,
"I was reminded as I said goodbye to the criminals of Turdistan (who were being extradited to the US)."
Funny, in a cynical, Israeli kind of way ;o)
