Schnappi das kleine Krokodil

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Gail of Crossing the Rubicon2 for tipping me off to just the thing I needed to get all those Harry Chapin songs out of my head yesterday.  She posted a link to a story about a 4-year-old German girl named Joy Gruttman who wrote and recorded a song called 'Snappy the little crocodile' which was posted to her family's web site.

That right there should have been heartwarming enough to get me to go click over and have a listen.  But it turns out a Cologne radio station discovered the song and started playing it on the air.  This led to people calling in to request the song... several remixes (a dance mix, a beat mix and a pop mix so far), and it is now the #1 song on the German pop charts!

Please, please I have one request:  If it turns out this is something really sinister (like, for instance her parents are drug addicts who sold their little girl to a recording studio in order to pay off their dealer), please don't tell me. My kids were still singing the song when I tucked them into bed last night and I don't want anything to sully that fun.

Click here to listen to her sing the original version, and click here to see the words and to find links to the other versions of the song.  According to a story about the 4-year-old star, 'Schnappi das kleine Krokodil' even edged out the likes of Kylie Minogue and Linkin Park for the top spot on the charts.

One question I would ask my German readers:  Does she sound as adorable to your ears as she does to mine?  Also, if anyone wants to tell me what (besides a little crocodile, of course) this little angel is singing about, it would make my week.  However, in keeping with my original request, if it turns out she has a real potty mouth in German, I would rather not know what she's saying.... mmkay?

[UPDATE:  Here is a little more information as well as a servicable translation provided by a dear (and patient) friend]

1.  The little girl was 6 when she recorded the song, not 4.

2.  She didn't write it, her aunt (who is a professional children's song writer) wrote the words and composed the tune.

And now, here is the translation:

I am Schnappi, the little crocodile,
I live in Egypt, right next to the Nile,
first I lived in an egg,
but then shnapped my way free

chorus
Schni-schna-schnappi schnappi-schnappi-schnapp
.....

I am Schnappi the little crocodile
have sharp teeth and mighty many of them
I shnap what's there to shnap
I shnap and am good at it

chorus

I am Schnappi the little crocodile
I love to shnap, that's my favourite play
I sneak up to mum
and show her how well I shnap

chorus

I am Schnappi the little crocodile
I'm never tired of shnapping
I shnap daddy's leg
and then just fall asleep

chorus

I have an 8 month old son who loves this song! The first time he saw the video his eyes lit up and he smiled constantly, never taking his eyes off the screen. Consequently, his parents have it constantly going around and around their heads! Great to see the English translation and know there's no sinister messages sneaking in to his impressionable little brain!

Congratulations, Schnappi made it to New Zealand. In fact, for a few weeks it's been on rotation on local music TV channel. The song is great, and I think one of the reasons everyone likes it so much is that people are growing tired of hip-hopping gangsters, brit rock and half-naked pop divas. Go Schnappi!

My friend in Holland just told me about this. It rocks! The video put me off a bit when I saw that though...
From the UK by the way, why isn't it in our charts... Unfair

Posted by: Alexi | Apr 23, 2005 12:16:11 AM

hey this song is being sung every where in new zealand! no one atcually knows wat it means but its so catchy that no one really cares... we just try to guess how to pronounce the words and hummm to the parts that dont really make any sense!!!

Posted by: hollie | Apr 25, 2005 12:12:15 PM

I have just purchased the single for my daughter...in fact it is playing now as I type. They have put 8 different mixes of the song on the CD. SO as u can imagine I have heard this song at least 50 times in the last 2 days. She loves it, I copied the video that comes on the CD to a VCD so she can watch the vid - 2 mixes of it - on our TV. I guess its better than having her listen to Britney or Eminem !!

Just a little note...

In the third verse she says the word "speil." The translation program you used correctly translated that to "play," however in the context of the song the word would actually translate to "game," so the line would read "I love to shnap, that's my favourite game." It's one of those weird double meaning words...

Thanks for posting the words though!!

Posted by: Ted | May 26, 2005 3:52:17 PM

I think the reason it's so popular, is that it conjures up a sense of innocent happiness that none of us really remember, but think we had when we were children. And no-one wants to grow up anymore... I know I don't :)

Schni schna schnappi... schnappi-schnappi-schnap!

The song got up to number #3 here on the charts in NZ. I find the song cute and everything, but number 3? Very odd.

I do really like it though, but just because I can imagine my 1 year old niece sitting on the floor bobbing to it. Very cute.

Hi all,

I found out today that this song and an album are being released in the U.K in September. I believe that the follow up song is about a Llama. I think they are going to be on Universal records.

Posted by: Carly | Aug 20, 2005 12:59:36 PM

hey i´m german and in defense of my country i have to say this: everybody i know think´s it great for kids...but not for the number one spot in the charts!! most people were annoyed, but seeing that a lot of other countries have just as bad a taste in music(topping schnappi in the charts), i´m kind of relieved that we´re not alone in our madness...
