Gmail update!

The honchos over at google seem to be loosening their grip on the gmail invites because I am positively swimming in them!

Anyone, friend or foe, who would like an invite is welcome to leave me a comment (or send me an e-mail) with your name and e-mail address.

The more I use gmail, the more I like it. You know yahoo is running scared because they just upped their free storage to 100mb... still only 1/10th of gmail's free storage. And of course there is the great way gmail associates all related e-mails into 'conversations'.

All this and spell check too!

What are you waiting for?

...actually, I'm waiting for gmail to offer me "keepyouryahooidentity", so I don't have to tell everyone of that new primary email address I urge them to use? :) Yahoo's been with spell check for some time now.

What really reasonable thing can gmail offer me so that I really want an invite? [no offence, I am really trying to understand the benefits. must be the marketing nerd in me.]

The big seeling point (IMHO) is the way they associate all related messages. Let's say someone sends you an e-mail today. You respond immediately, but the person doesn't get around to writing back for a week or two. With Yahoo, not only is your email and his/her e-mail in a different place... but you have to dig through a week's worth of mail to find either of them.

With gmail, all messages that are associated with one another (incoming and outgoing) are shown to you in an accordian array (like a column of solataire cards would be laid out). You can easily review points that were made in the course of several e-mails, and never have to slowly dig through piles of old mail. You can assign labels to incoming mail so that it is organized by subject, sender, or whatever you want.

Also, when you compose mail, there is an auto-complete feature that allows you to easily fill in the 'to' field. There is an auto-complete feature for the text entering potion too... but I haven't played with that yet.

Yahoo's answer to gmail (100mb) is pretty weak, since many people were paying for that much storage at yahoo until gmail came along.

I'm not trying to convince anyone... but you DID ask. :-)

Not only spell check, David, but Yahoo has also made your messages searchable!

Of course, even with 100M, you do have to put up with those flashing and dancing graphic ads with Yahoo's free email, or you can use Gmail and have to put up with Google's quiet and not-in-your-face text ads. Hm...

I'll take an invite if you're still offering.

Thanks again for sending me the invite, David. I have been enjoying using Gmail. I lost the email saved on my hard drive several times in the past, and now I don't have to worry about that anymore. That's probably the best part as far as I am concerned. I also like the searchability aspect.

The only problem I have is that I had my old AOL email address for the last 7 years, and changing is a bit of a pain.

David,

If you still have any extra Gmail invites I'd appreciate if you could send me one. And, by the way, although this is only my second time visiting your site, I have to admit there are so many elequent, thoughtful and interesting posts here. I've been debating joining the infertility discussion as a family memeber is unfortunately experiencing some of that right now, but I haven't quite thought of what to say yet.

In any event, if you still have an invite please send me one. Thanks.
