A nudge in the (hopefully) right direction

In my last post I sent out a call for suggestions.  Apparently I didn't give enough direction.

For the record, I like most of the stuff you guys recommended.  Except for Slivovitz.  I wouldn't use Slivovitz to loosen stuck bolts on my Vespa, for fear of offending the Vespa's sensibilities.  

Slivovitz is what people come up with when trying to manufacture something, anything, intoxicating that is also kosher for Passover.  What, constipation isn't bad enough... I need burnt tastebuds and hearburn too?!

Back to the mission at hand, I mentioned Drambuie, Cointreau, Benedictine and Gran Marnier in my previous post in order to provide some parameters... some chalk lines within which I like to play the game.

It's not that I don't like those other things you suggested (except Slivovitz!).  It's just that I particularly like things that fall into that brandy-ish, liquory, aromatic realm of the four I mentioned above.

Just so you don't think I'm a snob, I used to be fond of an Israeli triple-sec-sort-of-liquor called 'Moishe Shicker' (literally drunk Moses).  I kid you not!  I used to have people bring it back from Israel for me!  But I'm pretty sure they stopped making it... and besides it was good, but not great.

Drambuie is good.  Cointreau is good.  Benedictine and Gran Marnier, as far as I can remember, are good. But I'm looking for great.  Sabra Grand was great!

Moishe Shicker. Wow, I don't think there is anyway you could put a box like that with a name like that anywhere in the world these days. . . .

I wonder if it's been repackaged and is still out there.

We don't keep kosher. I remember Sabra Grand putting in an appearance here in ערצות הברית a couple pesachs ago. My wife and I talked about it but didn't because sweet alcohol is dangerous for me and distasteful to her.

When my wife and I were dating we discovered Fu Ki plum wine. We loved it. The factory was destroyed in an earthquake. Kikkoman took the brand over, and now it is a grape based wine with plum flavoring and almond extract. My wife is allergic to almonds. Our longing for the original Fu-Ki is not dissimilar for your longing for Sabra grand.

That said, why not roll your own? It certainly takes less courage than making your own eggnog. Just find a kosher brandy or arak, or vodka or whatever that you like well enough and let some oranges or blood oranges steep in it for a few months. Start it now, and it could be ready for Pesach.

But on a second more thorough look, it doesn't actually seem to be in stock anywhere. The above link describes the process for making it:

"Carmel 777 Brandy is distilled in a combination of a pot & continuous still and aged in small French oak barrels for three years in the 100 year old brandy cellar at Rishon Le Zion. Israeli grown Kumquats are macerated in the resulting brandy to produce the orange flavor and the delicate balance of the final product."

Might be worth an experiment.

Carmel 777 is excellent, BTW - I recommend it highly as an after-dinner tipple.

I have recently discovered a full bottle of Moishe Shicker in my mother in laws drink cabinet. She let me have it, and slowly we are getting through it on a Friday night, just a little taste each week.

But, I have discovered that this lovely liqueur is extinct from production, and we have been enjoying a rare taste of the past. So, its now been upgraded to special occasions only. Do you have a bottle at the back of a drinks cabinet, or at the back of a kitchen cupboard. If you have and you don't want it, I can give it a very good home. Willing to travel to collect 40 miles radius of Manchester UK, or I pay the shipping through paypal.
