I think for many it's a tradeoff, or at least should be a tradeoff. I am willing to carry my blackberry with me most of the time, but in return, when I need an afternoon off to take the kids somewhere, I can do it without any hassle.

I also consider intellectual labor to be different than manual labor (or even "drudgery" type of labor). Intellectual labor can't always be confined to particular hours, inspiration can occur at any time, and at those times it is most productive to "work".
