Bupkis
Yeah, I know... this whole 'showing up empty-handed' thing is getting old. I'm working on a secret project (shhhhh). Honest. I'll let you in on it in a few days. A week, tops.
Anyhoo, since you made the effort I suppose I should put something up...

asher... No problem Pooh bear. Just sit quietly until the dizziness passes. :-)
val... Aaaayyoo, who you callin' Stunod? BTW, how did my Jewish older sister start tossing around Italian slang? :-)

I feel so much better--I don't get it either.
But I always loved the word bupkis.

Years and years of hanging out with lots of "I-tralians"!!!! They're practically Jewish, lots of great food and guilt!

This is one of those center of balance things which appears to be impossible, yeah? Like the relationship of the hammer and ruler allows them to hang off the table without falling. Wild and completely counterintuitive.

I am SO doing this later today -- the 14-yr-old will want to do it at school when classes resume...!
Center of mass -- what's to figure? ;o/
Hope you get room for more than 'bupkis' later... we'll be fine; we'll be fine.

How the hell do you do that?

Baila... This probably appeals mostly to computer geeks. A bug is an undocumented fault, defect or problem with a computer program. When someone finds one of these problems they submit a 'bug report' to the people who coded the program so that it can be fixed. computer geeks tend to relate to the real world in much the same way they relate to the virtual world ... so when something like what is pictured is encountered, it is funny to call it a 'bug' (i.e. a flaw in the design of the world) and to want to report it to the One who wrote the original code (G-d). Clear? :-)
Val... Ah yes, Lisa's influence. :-)
Benji... I've been assured this is legit. Let me know if you try it.
Wry Mouth... I had a feeling this would appeal to you. :-)
Ed... Ask wry Mouth. ;-)

This sort of thing is a fairly simple problem from a mechanics perspective. It only works with some kinds of rulers, though. The hammer doesn't particularly matter (though a seriously unbalanced one would take some doing), but the ruler is crucial. Finite element analysis of the ruler will clearly show how the forces are distributed.
I have to admit that I was confused because I don't see this as a 'bug' in the world, but rather a feature. It's all a matter of how you look at it, eh? ;)
