Well thanks a whole hellovalot!
You lot that told me to go ahead and read the Harry Potter books... I'm holding you 100% responsible for the dark circles under my eyes!
I can't remember the last night I got more than 5 hours sleep!
I just finished 'The Goblet of Fire' last night... and the next HP book is sitting on my night table... daring me to try to ignore it and go to sleep this evening. It's perched there, taunting me, like some malignant vial of literary crack!
Very funny! Tell the dyslexic guy to read the series of addictive books that never ends!!!

The books are far too long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and far too good too!!
Posted by: Frummer? | Aug 31, 2005 6:03:41 PM
I'm about 1/3 of the way thru the new one and frustrated that work and life get in the way of just being able to read it straight thru. Unfortunately when I finally get the time to read, I'm so tired, I don't get very far before nodding off. This isn't to say the books are boring, but to do with my lack of time & energy! :(
SO... just pick up the next book and enjoy! ;)

I'm still waiting to read #6. Do any locals have a copy they're not using? (I'm in Jerusalem.)
Posted by: Rahel | Aug 31, 2005 6:31:20 PM
They are so worth it. Live a little, it is fun.
Posted by: Jack | Aug 31, 2005 6:50:36 PM
do you like them at least? cuz that would suck if you hated them, TOTALLY wasting precious sleep time...
im still going strong, havent read them, never will (bli neder).

They're great, though I haven't read the most recent. I'm sure they'll enter the cannon of must-read kid's lit and that our grandkids will be reading them.

Thank G-d I let the pressure to read these the summer before Goblet came out. I only had three to read before the "new" one at the time. I can't imagine tackling 7 of those in a row.

They really are great books. When the first one came out, someone recommended it for my book club, but because it's a "children's book" they passed on it. Too bad. Whenever I finished a great book, I always feel an ache of withdrawal, combined with sadness. You're lucky, unlike many who read the books as soon as they came out, they didn't get the chance to fulfill their appetite for more with immediate satisfaction. : )

You commute - what about books on tape?
Posted by: lisoosh | Aug 31, 2005 9:06:04 PM
Tanya... Oh yeah... very mature! :-)
Frummer... Is that like the guy who tells his friend about a restaurant where he ate the previous week: "The food was terrible... and the portions were so small!"? :-)
Val... I agree... it's so unfair the way work gets in the way of stuff like reading! :-)
Rahel... They should have it at the library, no?
Jack... If I don't start getting some sleep the whole 'life' thing may become problematic.
Tonny... No, it's like banging my head against a brick wall (I'm hoping it will feel pretty damn good when I finally stop). /sarcasm
Doctor... You mean they haven't already? :-)
Chaim... Gee thanks. Nothing like a little more pressure! :-)
Jaime... My big problem is that everyone else in the house has read them already... so they are constantly asking "What part are you up to no?... oh you won't believe what happens next!" Sucks to be me.
Lisoosh... When I used to drive from our house in CT into Manhattan for work I tried the whole books on tape thing. I find that having a narrator for the whole book blocks my ability to conjure the images and voices properly.

David,
In a short time the playoffs will hit and the Sox will make you not only lose the rest of your hair but they'll rob you of your sleep, so this just a good warm up for that. ;)

What a great line "literary crack." I have felt so many times that either a book or pottery was like a drug. :)
Posted by: JC | Aug 31, 2005 10:48:47 PM
i know exactly how you feel, when I was in Israel last year I read the first one and then proceeded to read the first four in a matter of days, its just like crack, not that I know what that would be like,

MWAHAHAHAHAAAAA!
Today Harry Potter.
Tomorrow, Star Wars.
My plot for world domination is working. It's working! It's working!
Someday, this will all be mine!
MWAHAHAHAHAAAA!

Ha! Try being in a househould with TWO HP-addicted members and only one copy of the latest book... lemme tell you, when The Lovely Wife(tm) wants to read the book that you're clutching for dear life, you better read and read fast (which fortunately, I do).
Pace yourself, though: remember, book seven probably ain't coming out for a couple of years (Rowling has to figure out which great-great-great grandchildren inherit the royalties from book six). Finishing the last book and going "Whattaya mean there isn't a new one yet?" is QUITE the frustrating experience.

This is so odd, David. I just finished reading Sorcerer's Stone to my younger son, David. My wife had read the books to my older son until he became an independent reader. This was my first time reading HP. I like the book but I would have to say I enjoyed just having some quiet time with my middle child even more.

Jack... Hold on a sec, I need to go check the stats again.......... OK, I'm back. I thought perhaps there had been a whole bunch of make-up games played in the past 24 hours of which I wasn't aware. nope, the Red Sox are still statistically well ahead of the Angels (.588 vs .561). Just to make sure you're clear on how this is done... though not a universally accepted practice, one usually waits until their team is ahead before beginning to gloat. :-)
JC... Like most of the really good lines you will read here, this one is not my own. I honestly have no idea who coined the term 'literary crack', but it has been used to good effect for some time now.... but thanks. :-)
Jonah... Yeah, that's what I've 'heard' as well. ;-)
Sarah... My goodness, aren't we keyed up! I've seen all the Star Wars movies countless times with the kids but I am not at all a Star Wars junkie. They lost my respect with the Ewoks and Jar Jar. HP, on the other hand, started out with silly kid's stuff and quickly moved towards serious grown-up fiction.
Efrex... Remember, I've met your wife... my advice is not to deny her ANYTHING she wants. Now that she is expecting that goes double! :-)
Christopher... They get progressively 'darker' as the books go on so you might want to read a few chapters ahead (my wife did this with our kids) so you can smooth over some of the sharper edges if necessary.

Three games is statistically insignificant.
Posted by: Jack | Sep 1, 2005 10:15:19 AM
Jack... "Three games is statistically insignificant"
Not on the last day of the season it isn't! ;-)

It gets worse... I finished book six, felt that it had been too long since I read book five, went back and read that one again and am now on page 200 of book six again....and with a 15 month old and a five year old, this all happens into the wee hours of the morning...yawn...we will sleep again one day...

Poor man's Tolkien! (but still fun)

Sorry to hear you are losing sleep... Chris is in the same boat as you. After resisting all this time, he finally started them and has just begun the fourth book. He refused a ride to work the other day, in the pouring rain because he wanted the bus time to read...

They also get more depressing as they get darker. I finished Book 6 and for the life of me couldn't remember what I enjoyed about the series in the first place.
Rahel- after that glowing recommendation- there is a waiting list, but you are welcome to borrow my copy. British version however- be warned!

Sorry, can't relate...never got into Harry Potter.

Several years back, my husband read the first four HP books one right after the other, and then, because he had become so involved, he would occasionally refer to the characters as real people. Given his usual laughing at me me becoming emotionally involved in TV show and book plots, it was a very strange turn of events. So glad when he got over it!

David: What's the rush? You don't have to finish them all in a week. Slow down and enjoy them!
It takes me forever to get through a book (heck, Tom Clancy's Bear and the Dragon has been sitting on my nightstand for 2 years). Of course, that's because I only read on Shabbos and by the time dinner's done and the dishes washed I'm unconcious, and then when I get to the couch The PT wants me to "BEEEE ITTT!!!"
What was I saying...? Oh yeah, SAVOR the books. Don't rush.
Oh, and it's been so long since I finished the sixth one, that I've forgotten what happened in that one, and was a little lost in the beginning of 7. Almost makes me want to go back and read it again.

nrg... Glad to hear I'm not alone in burning the midnight oil.
Rabbi's Kid... Or the rich man's Robert Jordan. It's all a matter of perspective. :-)
Kay... I can so sympathize! Please let him know he's not alone. In fact one of my daily reads posted a funny exchange she had with her husband: here
Purple Parrot... I had wanted to read the UK editions but none of the Brits in my community responded to my plea. By the way... nothing wrong with dark. :-)
She... That is so typical!!! I can't believe you had the nerve to say that here! [kidding] See, I can laugh at myself... occasionally! :-) For a good laugh, follow the link I placed in my response to Kay. It sounds like a lot of wives are putting up with a lot of slightly obsessed husbands.
Psychotoddler... What's the rush?! I suppose you were one of those kids who could make their box of Milk Duds last past the opening credits at the movie theater, right? :-)

David,
I read Order of the Phoenix in 1 Shabbat, I didn't sleep but I finihsed the book!!!!!! Efrex, I agree with David, remember, do not make the pregnant woman grumpy!! Anyway I enjoyed the new one more than Order of the Phoenix, and if my calculations are correct we should be getting a new movie soon!
